Weddings, Proms, and High School Reunions

I can usually find a dress for most occasions.  Work, church, winter formals, it is easy for me to find dresses for those occasions.  Summer cocktail dresses are a bit more difficult.  Earlier this week I went on the hunt for the perfect summer cocktail dress, and came up empty.  Consequently, I resorted to my old stand by.

I’ve had this dress for three years, and it is the perfect summer cocktail dress.  I bought this dress for my friend Ali’s wedding.  Tonight I wore it to the church prom. Tonight I walked the red carpet, and interviewed the kids as they entered the building.

It was wonderful to see all of the girls modestly attired.  They wore beautiful gowns and cocktail dresses.  The teenagers had more luck than I did this week shopping for a dress.

Last summer I wore this dress to my high school reunion.  In 2009, I wore this same dress to my friend Ali’s wedding.  It is definitely my go-to cocktail dress.

I bought this dress at Betsey Johnson. Whenever I go to the Stanford mall, I have to park as far away from Betsey Johnson store as possible. Whenever I go in to Betsey Johnson, I come out with something. Betsey Johnson is great for petite women. The hemlines run on the short side, but there are still a few dresses that are long enough for taller women. If you have the time, and the money, check out Betsey Johnson, it is definitely worth a look.

My Hectic Weekend

My hectic weekend started out with dinner with friends Friday night at Benihana in California, and ended with Easter Sunday in Idaho at the hospital with my mom.  My dress made an appearance in both locations.

I don’t go to Benihana just for the food.  I go to be entertained.  I enjoy watching the chef catch shrimp in his hat and make onion volcanoes.  I fancy myself a decent cook, but there is no way that I could catch shrimp in a hat.  The only thing I can do is catch whip cream in my mouth, and I can only do that some of the time.

After church my sisters and I spent the day with my mom at the hospital.  My mom has a rare disease named Light Chain Deposition Disorder.  We were able to share Easter dinner together and then spend the afternoon and evening with mom.

The great thing about my mom is she taught me my love for dresses.  She taught me the how and where to shop.  She told me that it doesn’t matter what a dress looks like on a hanger, you should always try it on.

I got this dress at Anthropologie a couple of weeks ago.  I have to admit I usually don’t buy clothes at Anthropologie.  Most of the clothes in Anthropologie are made for tall girls and they just don’t fit me.  I made the exception for this dress. This dress is going to be my go-to dress for summer.

Spring has Sprung

I broke down and wore the first of many spring dresses.  I couldn’t take it anymore I was sick of my winter clothes.  Spring has sprung.  The weather is gorgeous today and I couldn’t wait to get outside.

Today’s dress I picked up at the BCBG outlet.   I’m a big fan of BCBG.  The brand typically fits me well.  I love how this particular dress drapes and I also love the print.

I got this awesome jacket at Gitane last summer.  It is great for a spring afternoon.  At least I can finally wear white again without feeling guilty.  I know it isn’t quite memorial day yet, but hey I live in California.

Transitional Clothing–Between Winter and Spring

I struggle to know what to wear between Winter and Spring.  It’s easy to know what to wear between Spring and Summer, but between Winter and Spring–That’s just hard.  I love my Winter clothes and I love my Spring clothes, but Sprinter or Wing clothes—I’m at a loss.

Today I decided to wear one of my Winter dresses and put a Spring twist on it.  I ditched the black belt and black shoes, added  a nude woven belt, and nude woven shoes, and voila I feel ready for warmer weather.

When I’m cold I just add a sweater and I’m ready for the day.  It’s the perfect outfit for any climate.

I picked up this dress at one of my many wandering through the Nordstrom Rack.  To be hones,t I typically don’t buy dresses at the Rack, but I always find shoes.  It is a great place to find designer shoes at a discount price.  I was lucky enough on this occasion to find this great dress at a wonderful price. I recommend that when you are hunting for you shoes that you check out the dresses.  It may be worth your while.

Custom Clothes Done Your Way……

Last year my friend Deanna introduced me to eShakti. At eshakti you can customize your clothes.  You can add sleeves, change the length, and even have dresses made to your own personal measurements.  It’s like having your own personal tailor.

I got this dress last month from eShakti.  I was able to modify the length for my 5ft frame.  Instead of the dress hitting me way below the knee, I was able to modify it so it hit right at the knee.  I recommend eshakti for anyone who wants to make dresses her own.

Oh Spring Where art Thou?

According to almanac.com spring officially began on March 20th 2012 at 1:14 am EDT.  Though it is officially spring, it still feels like winter here in California. I’m sick of the rain and the cold weather.  The daffodils and the tulips are blooming and I want to enjoy them without freezing whenever I step outside.

Today I decided to wear one of my spring dresses and my favorite black Zara blazer so I could still feel seasonal and warm at the same time.  I picked up this dress at Francesca’s collections at Blackhawk Plaza. I love the bold colors and how it drapes.  The dress has a matching sash, but today I decided to replace it with my favorite steve madden belt. To finish the look I grabbed my Kenneth Cole boots and a pair of tights.

The Dress that goes Everywhere

Our Florida vacation ended with a day Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Lion King brought to life.  We went on a mini safari and were able to see different animals up close and personal.  It was nice to see the animals roaming free. We were close enough that if we wanted we could reach out and touch some of the animals.  I don’t mind being close to a giraffe–but a lion,  now that’s terrifying.

After a few hours with the animals we headed on our around the world tour in two hours.  In our four hours at Epcot we visited nearly every continent, and learned a bit about the culture of each new country. My favorite country was Morocco.  My brief stop in Morocco reminded me of the time I spent in Portugal a few years ago.  I loved the different tile work and colors.  The best part about our mini-world tour is that we got to meet locals.  Almost all of the people who work in the Epcot countries are natives of the country they are representing.  We spent time eating chocolate mousse and creme brulee in France.  We also ventured to Italy, Mexico, Canada, England and Japan.

The dress I wore around the world has literally been around the world, and not just on an abbreviated tour of Epcot.  It is the dress I take on every vacation, but after this trip, I think it deserves it’s own passport.  I take it everywhere because it does not need to be ironed, is very comfortable, and goes anywhere. I think every girl needs a dress like that.

I found this dress at Nordstrom on a shopping trip with my mom.  I love shopping with my mom.  She helps me pick out the most interesting outfits.  She taught me a trick when I young and first learning how to shop.  Just because a dress looks bad on a hanger, does not mean it will look bad on you.  I’ve stuck by this rule ever since.
